Church History

The history of First Baptist Church dates back to an autumn day, October 2, 1877.  Beginning with ten charter members, the church was organized just four months after the city of Galena had been incorporated.  The area was soon to become an important lead mining settlement and was filled with the rough, tough, booming, and rich, thus giving the new church ample field for harvest.

Some 133 years later, First Baptist Church is still spreading the Gospel to Galena and the surrounding area.  In order to accomplish this purpose, we offer a variety of worship services and Bible studies, various outreach programs, and activities for all ages.  We understand that if we’re going to minister to a changing world, we must be a changing church, willing to make the necessary adjustments to present an age-old message with new methods that will enable us to reach the largest number of people in the least amount of time.

Our desire is to lead the lost to salvation in Jesus Christ and membership in His church, nurture them to spiritual maturity, equip them for ministry through the discovery and development of spiritual gifts, and incorporate them in regular, God-honoring worship and service.
